"I guess some rogue chozo made their way back to Zebes between Metroid 1 and this game, and littered the planet with more items than ever before." 12:02
Funny you should mention that...

Regarding Phantoon. Supposedly in the Japanese manual it is revealed to be the ghost of original Mother Brain. (Which is also why it shows up as a secret boss in Other M after MB is dead.)

Super metroid was my first metroid game when I was 10 back in 97, and I absolutely fell in love with it. Seeing those orange or green doors not knowing how to opening them and the wonder of what the game would bring next, was absolutely fantastic. Sometimes I wish I got amnesia so I could completely forget the game just so I can gain those same feelings I did when I was younger

One last comment: that tunnel/tube thing mystified me and my friends for weeks when we first played this back in 1994. We entered Meridia through alternate routes before one of us got bored one day and set off a power bomb. That moment where we realized actions we took could actually change the game world was MIND blowing. And truth be told, it still kinda amazes me. I’m sure other games have done something similar since SM but I can’t remember another game that wowed me like it did back in 1994.

God I love this game.

It's really bizarre that you don't have hundreds of thousands of subscribers, considering the undeniable quality of your videos. Great thing the YouTube algorithm is in love with Metroid right now, so it recommended me your channel.

Amazing stuff, man. Subbed.

The only complaint I can add is that, unlike future games, the map shows you where items are, but not whether you've collected them. Also, a couple or few rooms have two items represented by one dot on the map. It can make completion really frustrating if you aren't getting everything right away and aren't keeping perfect track of what you've missed. Still a masterpiece, but future games did this part better (even though they don't let you get everything until the end).

I have 2 things to say about super Metroid

1. The opening sequence has gotta be THE best of any game I've ever played. Just comes out of the gates firing on all cylinders and does not waste a second of your time

2. The thing that always comes to mind for me when I think of super Metroid is "expect the unexpected". At the beginning a chozo statue gives you an item upgrade, telling you that these statues are benevolent and a place to rest. Except not 5 minutes later a chozo statue comes alive and tries to kill you. But again later a chozo statue stands up and carries you to where you need to go. Every time you think you know how the world is gonna behave, it throws something like that at you and tells you to think again. And that's a huge part of why it feels so incredibly fresh every time you play it.

The Speed Booster is the best thing to ever happen to this series

This game has such a distinct look to it and an atmosphere only possible to create with a sixteen bit artstyle. No future game has ever been able to recreate this (with am2r being the closest) it’s that calming yet strange uncanny vibe. The only other game I’ve seen able to capture this feeling through art is axiom verge

Mother brain has got to be my favorite boss of all time. The feeling of dread, hopelessness and then swift revenge. Not to mention the epic music
