Team Cherry really looked at their cute lil Hungry Knight and went "what if we gave him like, a super messed up backstory"

The shadow cast by your sibling’s future, the stain it will one day leave is tall, and powerful.

Unknowingly, the very abyss itself casts its shadow upon you.

You are the chosen one.

You are the darkness.

You are

The god of gods. The void unified.

You are the Shade Lord.

You are the knight.

 My absolute favorite (and most depressing) reveal from this scene is that neither you nor the hollow knight are purely hollow. In one tiny moment, one brief tiny thought crosses both of the characters;
The knight reaches for help,
And the hollow knight hesitates.

The Pale King was doomed to fail from the start.

While Hollow Knight's shadow cast his Tall, dignified form,
The Knight's shadow cast the whole abyss itself, the shade lord.

if the hollow knight had helped the knight, it would've shown to the pale king he wasn't without emotion, he would've shown mercy.
this most certainly would've gotten him casted down back into the abyss, and nothing would ever want to go back down there.

The more I think, the more I find Pale King's requirements for "perfect vessel" makes no sense even from the very beginning. If he wanted a vessel that has no mind to think he should've grabbed a void that is unable to interact with him, not the one that is able to think about how to ascend the abyss

 No cost too great.
No mind to think.
No will to break.
No voice to cry suffering.
Born of God and Void.
You shall seal the blinding light that plagues their dreams.
You are the Vessel.
You are the Hollow Knight.

Something about the fact the Pale King never even saw the Knight clinging to the balcony and likely never knew it existed, only for it to go on to succeed him as king and end the Infection where he could not is really poignant.

The Pale King struggled desperately to find a solution to the plague and would die never knowing he was once a few feet away from it.
