One needs two flys, a woolly bugger and another one.

People fall into the trap of thinking that if they are not catching fish it must be because they are using the wrong fly. More often it is due to one of the multitude of other factors that can't be overcome by spending money in a fly shop.

Beginner's box = Wooly Bugger, Zebra midge, a dry caddis, parachute Adams, Hare's ear nymph and maybe a pheasant tail.

I'm always reminded of magazine articles from several decades ago that mention "the deadly dozen" flies that you should never be without. Elk Hair Caddis, Adams, Pheasant tail, Wooly Bugger, Hare's Ear nymph, soft hackles, etc. Those flies from some 50 years ago will still make the list today!

I work in a fly shop and get asked the fly selection question multiple times daily. I have a small list of mostly older, more suggestive, go-to patterns that I recommend that almost perfectly matches your recommendations. I hadn’t thought of it as “top, mid, bottom”, but that is what I have been recommending, now I have a better explanation as to why. Thanks!

All these are good points. I'm just appreciative when the fly shop employee talks with me, tells me recommendations & ideas, picks out a few flies in addition to what I already have, and it's a good conversation. Some fly shops it's like pulling teeth just to talk with the employee.

Zebra or other midge for a smaller, mid-column presentation; thread ant as a dropper just below the surface. In the late summer on small streams, I've caught more fish on a thread ant than any other fly.

I think this is great info for the beginner and a pretty good reminder for the novice as well!

I’m from Arkansas and fish the Little Red almost exclusively. That being said, the Root-beer Midge is a fly that usually will produce well for me. This is an outstanding video. I really appreciate you guys, and all local shops.

Add a bionic ant to hold up those nymphs and this is solid
