  It’s so easy to hate Charley but he was a little boy whose mother died, then his beloved brother was disappeared from his life and he was left with a cold businessman who was emotionally unavailable as well as angry at the little boy because of the loss of his wife& oldest son so he grew up alone and isolated. By the way the word Autism wasn’t commonly used when this came out , it opened up a lot of discussion

  Hoffman and Cruise were absolutely masterful in this movie.

  I think Tom Cruise should have gotten a Oscar for this part, it's not easy to make this character arc so believable. Dustin Hoffman won for Best Lead Actor, it got Best Picture, Best Screen Play, Best Director and had other nominations for cinematography, art direction, original music score, film editing.
