I had this happen with my gas cooker, exactly one month after the warrenty ran out two gas jets on same side of hob stopped working. The shop gave the usual clap trap and said nothing they could do. I took it upon myself to read the law at that time and phoned them back to quote their responsibilty. Many letters and phone calls later a new gas cooker was delivered. I then set about putting a cost against every letter, phone call and my time taken to get it sorted out. Then my solicitor sent a bill to the company asking for financial reimbursement and damages for the stress and inconvenience I experienced. The letter stated payment was to be made within 30 days or it would proceed to court action. Heard nothing for 29 days then got phone call, the company offered token gesture of a quarter of the amount I'd asked for, I declined and said see you in court. On day 30 a courier knocked on my door and handed me an envelope, inside a cheque for full amount and a gift certificate with an amount towards any purchase I made from their appliance range within 12 months.

Excellent video. Everybody should know bout the "6 year" law, I've claimed several times with a 100% success rate.

However, there's a new scam now doing the rounds. Many online retailers are now asking you to "Add Shipping Protection". You''ll find the wording to be something like this:

"Get peace of mind with Delivery Guarantee in the event your delivery is damaged, stolen, or lost during transit."

This is an absolute SCAM. If you buy a new product the retailer MUST get it to you in new condition. If it is damaged, lost or stolen it is 100% THEIR responsibility to replace it. You do not have to pay a penny for this protection, it is your legal right to receive what you paid for. Do NOT pay for this additional scam. In fact walk away and find another retailer, email the retailer and tell them WHY you have walked away. If enough people let them know their latest scam isn't working they'll drop it.

I did this with a laptop years ago. I had a fight on my hands and it took 10 months and had to go through the Financial Ombudsman but won.

Which Magazine have been trying to do this for years. In Ireland the sale of these large items is never complete until the shop has logged you into a 3 year INSURANCE contract to cover the potential breakdown of the Appliance : I have fought against this from day one. We had an appliance repair man who must have made countless thousands out of this SCAM. Driving round in huge crossovers before they became commonpkace and a repair box covered in leather + bringing his son to lift it out of the trunk while he stood with his hands behind his back telling you to buy a new one. We need to fight back to STOP the money drain on hardpressed households : 👹👺🤬

Summary - The Consumer Rights Act 2015 provides powerful protections that most shoppers are never told about.
Key takeaways include:
1/. The Warranty Myth: Retailers frequently claim that once a warranty (typically 12 months) expires, they have no responsibility. In reality, the law allows consumers to seek repairs, replacements, or refunds for up to 6 years in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland (5 years in Scotland) if an item is not of "satisfactory quality" or "durable" (1:45).
2/. The Retailer's Obligation: Your legal contract is with the shop that sold the item, not the manufacturer. Retailers often attempt to redirect customers to the manufacturer to avoid responsibility, which is legally incorrect (8:56).
3/. Right to Repair: Regulations introduced in July 2021 mandate that manufacturers must keep spare parts available for 7 to 10 years, invalidating the common excuse that an appliance is "unrepairable" due to missing parts (11:43).
4/. New Enforcement Powers: Since April 2025, the Competition and Markets Authority has the power to fine businesses up to 10% of their annual turnover for consumer law violations, significantly increasing the risk for companies that use deceptive tactics (12:44).

Practical steps to exercise your rights:
5/. Use the Law: When speaking to a retailer, explicitly state you are exercising your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and that the goods were not of satisfactory quality or durable (13:56).
6/. Maintain a Paper Trail: Always communicate in writing via email to avoid the "he-said, she-said" nature of phone calls (14:17).
7/. Independent Evidence: If a fault occurs after 6 months, you may need an independent engineer's report to prove the issue is inherent. This small investment often forces retailers to comply rather than face legal threats (14:36).
8/. Small Claims Court: If the retailer refuses, mention that you are prepared to take the matter to the small claims court. Retailers typically want to avoid this process over a single appliance (15:00).
