The fact that the awful version from Portugal got three turns right after the UK guy got blanked just got me more upset that no one turned for him

In 1979 in Clearwater Florida I was at a club on Cleveland St. that isn't there any more. It was a small venue, not more than maybe 60 or so people in the audience. The M.C. introduces the next performer by only saying it was his first time on stage. In walks this old guy, looked about 80 going on a hundred. he was around six foot six inches tall and lanky. He wore a white dress shirt and a loose skinny grey tie like was popular in the 1950's. His skin was like old leather that had been left out in the rain too many times and in the sun way too long and he had tattoos he got when he was in the navy, in what was originally called The Great War. He took the stage and handed the mike to the sound guy and said he didn't need it. He sat down on the stool, the house lights dimmed and he took out his harmonica. He was right. He didn't need the mike. He belted out this song in a thundering New Orleans French accent like nothing I have heard before or since. He sang every note pitch perfect. He sang it with a thousand year old soul. The hair on my arms stood on end. Then he sang it in French. Every place where the Animals had an instrumental interlude, he accompanied himself on that harmonica deep and bluesy. He finished in English again. For about ten almost awkward seconds there was absolute silence before we all burst into applause and a standing ovation. Then, almost as though he'd been caught intruding on a private party, he quietly walked off the stage. I'd heard later that evening that he'd just gotten out of the Florida State Prison the week before and had been there since 1920. Seemed he'd stolen a pig from the wrong person. His was the absolute most authentic performance of any song I had ever heard sung by anyone. About a month later I read his obituary in the Clearwater Sun.

the reason why judges didn't turn their chair for that UK guy was bcs he's very good. Too good, it made the judges' afraid he will only make the judges look so bad as a mentor.

The only one who sung it right and gave it justice was the UK guy.

High note in the middle of the final chorus aside, Matt Eaves (UK) delivered absolute perfection. The fact that no one turned for him is an absolute travesty.
