Kayleigh got pregnant with a man she realized she was not going to stay with long term. By her son's first birthday she needed her own place. She was a single mom, a teacher in her early 30s, and she had never owned a home. She did not think she ever would. She was scrolling Facebook Marketplace when she found a shipping container home. It was $125,000. She knew she could not do it alone. She called her grandma, told her she was in a bind, and asked for help. It was one of the harder phone calls she had made. Her grandma said yes. Her mom, who had built some retirement savings working at Amazon, pulled money without hesitation. Between them, Kayleigh had enough for a down payment. The bank would not help with the rest. Shipping container homes did not qualify for conventional loans. Kayleigh kept going back to the seller with what she had. The seller eventually agreed to five-year owner financing. Kayleigh almost did not get it. Another buyer came in with a higher offer first. When that deal fell through, the seller called Kayleigh back. She took it as a sign. The home is 320 square feet, parked along a river. It came mostly furnished. The front room has a pullout couch that doubles as her son's sleeping space, with sliding glass doors opening to the patio and the river. A fold-out table seats four when she has people over. Neighbors hang out on each other's patios. A black steam engine locomotive passes by the park each day, which for a two-year-old is about as good as it gets. The kitchen was a non-negotiable. She had looked at tiny homes where there was no oven and someone told her to just use an air fryer. She was not interested. This home has a full-size oven and stove, real counter space, and a large sink. The sink pulls double duty as a bath for her son since the bathroom has a shower but no tub. She is more at peace with that than she expected. The shower has two heads and feels like a step up from anything she has had before. In-unit laundry is something Kayleigh had not had in most of the places she has lived. Having it here matters. The floating shelves in the kitchen hold pottery she made herself in her art classroom. She is a teacher who makes ceramics and paintings, and the home has become a gallery for work she loves. She got a little emotional talking about it. She never thought she would own a home. She thought she would rent forever and that thought had made her sad. Standing in a place that is hers, on a river, watching her son figure out that this is a cool spot, she said it felt like everything had worked out. . . .
