I Finally Met the Artist I Studied for Years

A lot of my background comes from animation, where I learned to simplify the figure into basic shapes and focus heavily on movement. Erik approaches many of the same fundamentals from an illustration and figure drawing perspective, so I wanted to understand how he takes those simple ideas and pushes them toward something more naturalistic and dimensional. We start with gesture and why it's often better to begin with a loose, energetic mess instead of worrying about anatomy too early. Erik breaks down his "string of pearls" approach, using a line of action to establish movement before building simple three-dimensional forms on top of it. From there, we get into constructing the figure from the center mass, thinking about the head, rib cage, and pelvis as separate forms, creating more interesting twists and tilts, and using overlap to make figures feel dimensional. Erik also looks at the way I construct figures and shows me how he'd modify my approach. One of my biggest takeaways is that anatomy isn't necessarily where a good figure drawing begins. You can always add muscles, landmarks, and detail later. If the gesture, proportions, and simple forms aren't working first, adding more information isn't going to fix the drawing. This was especially fun for me because Erik is someone whose drawings and mannequinization I studied when I was learning. Getting the opportunity to finally sit down with him, show him how I think about the figure, and ask the questions I've had for years was incredibly valuable. If your figures tend to feel stiff, or you're struggling to draw people from imagination without relying completely on reference, I think there's a lot here that you can apply to your own work.
