  Your conceptual image is essentially correct. &nbsp;However, as written it&apos;s more specific. &nbsp;The actual Telegraph Road is on Michigan and goes through Detroit. &nbsp;The band were on the tour bus travelling Telegraph Road and Knopfler was reading Growth of the Soil by Norwegian Nobel Prize author Knut Hamsun and brought the two together as a song telling the founding and evolution of Detroit. &nbsp;So, you get the beginning of a sole explorer finding a good spot to make a homestead and farm that turned into a village, then a town and eventually a city. &nbsp;The city boomed and then went through various downturns. &nbsp;Look at Detroit in the late 70s and you&apos;ll see the implosion and the despair.<br><br>Yes, this is a one of the greatest songs. &nbsp;And, if you listen to the studio version the guitar outro is two minutes longer.

  Mark Knopfler the singer , guitarist and songwriter was born in Glasgow and grew up in Newcastle. Mark was a journalist before he became a professional musician. The album version of this song is actualy longer than this live version at more than 14 minutes, so it was almost never played on the radio of course.The guitar he plays at the beginning of the song is a 1937 National Style &quot;O&quot; resonator. Mark KNopfler started a solo career after Dire Straits and released 10 solo albums, Mark Knopfler also owns his own studio where he records his own albums but is also used by other artists, David Gilmour from &nbsp;Pink Floyd has recorded for his last solo album there as well.
