"You probably think this song is about you": initially, it could be anyone, but as the song progresses, more precise and personal clues are revealed until there is no mistake, and the point is made brilliantly; of course, it's about 'them', why wouldn't it be?
Another brilliant and fun analysis, Thanks.

I love how the song is almost a challenge - like the person/s it's about can't complain about it without looking vain.

“Well you’re where you should be all the time and when you’re not you’re with ….” Such a clever lyric in a song full of cleverness.

Amy, I am now so curious to know how you might react to "That's The Way I Always Heard It Should Be" by Carly Simon. I always appreciate your well-considered and honest reactions.

Your interpretation of the hunter/predator intro was "spot on" and your musical/artistic perception is impeccable 🎶

Carly TOTALLY has an "ordinary voice" which makes her one of us, and allows us all to put ourselves into the song.

I've watched several reviews you've done. I guess I never realized just how large a rock it was you lived under to have never heard these songs, but it sure makes watching your reviews that much more enjoyable. Most of us who grew up with this music never listened to it the way you do.To be frank, virtually every observation you make is not something I ever thought about before. I just heard a catchy tune on the radio that I could sing along with and laugh about. Your observations make me appreciate just how talented Carly (and the others you review) really are.

Thanks so much!

Only someone as clever as Carly Simon would describe someone as doing a gavotte, an old-fashioned dance designed for preening, and, "clouds in my coffee" has to be one of the greatest poetical allusions in music history, the more you think about it, the more it becomes so many more meanings

When I first heard this song as a kid, I was baffled by the logical paradox in the chorus. Every time it came on the radio I would listen carefully, trying to figure it out.

Eventually I understood that there was no logical solution; that it was basically an absurdist joke, like the ones that "The Goon Show" (which I later discovered and loved) was riddled with. But in the meantime, all that careful listening made me fall in love with song, and every little detail of it.

Life goes by, you learn many new lessons along the way, and have to unlearn almost as many, as you realise they've become out of date, or that they were never really right at all...

And it's only now, at age 60, thanks to this reintroduction to the song, that I finally recognise another meaning... Maybe the one that was in Carly's mind all along:

"Listen pal, you think you're so unique, but you're not even the only guy I know who's that vain! I'm basically swimming in guys as egotistical as you."

Mick Jagger is singing that "second layer" of vocals you thought was Carly Simon singing a second recording.
