I'd have a shutoff for the water heater by the water heater. When they go bad they leak and doing without running hot water is easier than dealing without any running water. I'd also put a valve on that expension tank, same reason, as those tanks don't last and it's way easier to be able to shut it off to change it and NOT interrupt all of the water flowing to the house.

I installed the same tank this week after being converted to a closed water system and fixed my problems. I had no room at the hot water tank I installed on my incoming line away from the hot water tank. It was an easy install

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe you forgot to mention checking and setting the correct air pressure of the expansion tank to match your operating water pressure.

Never hurts to have an expansion tank. Also, do have a tray at bottom that is plumbed out to a drain in case of a leak AND put water alarms and ideally, an electronic water shut off of the incoming cold water, if any leak is detected. I have this system and it works great. Still won't save you if your tank fails catastrophically and 40 gallons ends up on your floor. That is why you change your hot water tank about every 9.5 years. Mine is way over due at 14 years. Going strong but not risking it. Did not have an expansion tank for 14 years but adding one now. Also, a simple drip leg on the gas line to prevent corrosion getting into the tank.

This was a great explanation and this was exactly what was happening to my water heater. The water was coming in super cold and expanding with the heat. Great job thank you for the help.

Mine failed by rusting out and leaking water. Inside the wall you might have quite a mess down the line some time of it leaks like mine did. Just wanted to give you my experience.

Do you have an open or closed system? Do you know the difference? Many homes are on open systems and don’t need an expansion tank.
