The Medieval English Were Never Who We Thought—DNA Revealed Their Ancestry

In 1989, archaeologists lifted a girl from a chalk grave in Kent. She was buried in the 7th century with a knife, a bone comb, a spoon and a small pot — by every measure her people could see, an Anglo-Saxon girl. Then a lab read her DNA. One third of her ancestry traced to West Africa. For 500 years, England told itself a simple origin story: Angles, Saxons and Jutes crossed the sea and replaced the Britons. Then archaeologists argued almost nobody came at all. Now ancient DNA from hundreds of medieval skeletons — plus isotope evidence from more than 700 people's teeth — has overturned both versions. In this documentary we follow the evidence from the Bronze Age to the Norman Conquest: a Sarmatian horseman in a Roman ditch, a family at Buckland near Dover where two ancestries merged in a single generation, fifty beheaded Vikings on Ridgeway Hill, and a Surrey village where 1066 barely shows up in the DNA at all. The medieval English were never one people.
