The amount of medical staff who speak in this documentary and try to delicately explain things in an effort to minimize the hell they were aware of and ignored, is unreal.

When my great aunt was born she was severely disabled. She was crippled and could barely talk. A few weeks after she was born someone from the state showed up at my great grandparent's house and tried to take her away. The person told my great grandmother that she wasn't able to deal with the care my great aunt would require and they were too poor to raise her. My great grandfather evidently kindly asked the person to leave with his shot gun. My great aunt lived to be 70 years old. I don't know how my great grandparents did it. My grandmother ended up becoming a nurse so she could help take care of her.

I am a psych nurse with a schizophrenic sister and I lost both of my parents to substance abuse when I was 18 years old.
This treatnent of people is disgusting and inhumane, that being said our current system of throwing sick individuals back on the street after a couple days of "treatment" is also evil. We need facilities for people to stay in where their meds are managed and they are cared for.
Currently, your local jail is doing that for these people, and most of them do not belong in jail.

Two things can be true at once. This place has an awful history, we should learn from that and run better places, not get rid of all facilities.

Thorazine makes it so patients can barely pick up their feet so they walk shuffling their feet and people used to call that the Thorazine shuffle.

We pass this hospital on our way to Renn Fest every year. It’s in Maryland. The hospital has this haunting presence that no matter how many times I’ve seen it, it always makes me shiver.

I was sent there in the 80s.my experience was First night i was thrown in a padded room. Nothing , no blanket no anything. It was all about drugging you up and ignoring you. As long as you we're drugged and and quiet. Basically as if you were invisible . If you got thier attention in any way it was bad. Fortunately for me my stay was only a month. My heart breaks for the others.

My grandmother born in 1912 had schizophrenia and epilepsy. She spent time here and at the Government Hospital, now the Elizabeth Asylum in DC. I mostly remember Elizabeth. We need these again..now that we have a much better understanding. They gave my grandmother ice baths for hours, did you know that shock therapy causes an epilepsy episode..my poor grandma, thorazine was my grandmas best friend..left her drulling. I have bipolar, getting a shut down shot is still normal, as is strapping in a chair. Ive been to 7 mental Hospital, for me they just switched meds and 4 days later sent home.. it took decades to get the right cocktail. Im now 56. Prayers for all

When he said my mom was doing things w me that weren’t right , but I didn’t know, I thought it was what people did . But I don’t want to do that to people! That broke my heart. Bless this man and his trauma and I’m glad god warned his heart to not offend others. I’m so glad his trauma didn’t cause sexual trauma. What a sad thing. That poor little boy!

I went to this State Hospital once. I was studying to be a CNA, and it was a course in high school. We brought Christmas gifts to the patients. It was in the 80s, and I was 16. I remember being scared because it reminded me of the movie One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Very sad place. 😢

Thanks for the reminder of how it was, a tribute to our ancestors with mental illness.

I want to commend the people that made this documentary. I live in New York City, never saw or heard of Crownsvile State Hospital. There are so many important issues covered in this balanced documentary. Up here in New York City we have the same issues, the same brutish treatment of the mentally ill combined with whispers of secret experiments, hospitals with dark histories and treatment consisting of a dixie cup with a pill. I was facinated watching this documentary and this presentation is very well done. It's inspired hope for the human spirit. The documentary had a messge for all of us; there still exist good forces in our fundamentally corrupt world. Thank you.
