  As a historian this is absolutely a valid method for coming up with a new theory. Now all you need is a grad student to spend two to six years obsessing over one bridge.

  I want to highlight how well that video showcases the perfect scientific method:<br>- initial hypothesis (bridge should flat)<br>- litterature research (interview, the book)<br>- critical reading of the litterature (the Times article)<br>- initial experiment that doesn&apos;t work (the angle finder) but still provides good insight (bridge is lumpy)<br>- Simulation approach to the hypothesis (the simulation)<br>- Critical outlook on the results (we lack data)<br>- Finding fun in the presentation of results (making the bridge out of string)

  During the last refurbishment of the bridge, a complete 3D scan was undertaken, which was then modelled to provide a 3D finite element model. Every defect was recorded and recreated in the model. From this the bridge was checked against a theroetical original shape which indicated that the original arch was set out as as semi-circle which has now deformed. It is still assumed that the valley sides have moved in which have pushed the bridge up.
