Both of my black grandfathers grew up in Alabama during the 1930s. Each joined the army and fought in Korea. One used the GI Bill and went to medical school. The other used the VA loan and bought a house. Success is about making good choices.

Kids all get new cars from mom and dad nowadays, I grew up in the 70s friends and I all had to save to buy a beater. But we loved that beater! we worked on it and helped each other fix our cars. We grew up and appreciated things. You can tell the kids who got a free car usually a mess inside.
