Bobbie's great hit song, Ode To Billie Joe has a special meaning to me.  My Father was born on the 3rd of June.  The song was released on July 10.  Years later, my Mother passed away on July 10.  In 1967 I graduated from high school.  My classmates predicted that I would be playing music in Las Vegas in 10 years.  In 1977 I was hired by Bobbie to play the drums in her production shows at the Frontier Hotel in Las Vegas.  A year later in 1978, with a whole new show, we played at the Aladdin Hotel where Jim Stafford appeared with Bobbie.

When "Ode To Billie Joe" came out it wasn't exactly country and it wasn't rock and roll so she created a whole new type of music.  I fell in love with it in 1967 and I love it still in 2023.

This is an extremely interesting radio show/documentary about Bobbie Gentry and all the mystery that has surrounded her and her songs. I learned a lot I didn't know. A lot of the things said and revealed in this documentary I already felt and thought. Rosanne Cash tells the stories. The show was put together well. It's amazing how they found all these people both in England and the USA that had had dealings with the enigmatic Bobbie Gentry. She is still alive at 79 but nobody knows for sure where she lives. Some thinks it's in Mississippi on an island and some thinks California, etc... I think she bought that property on that island essentially buying the island to insure her privacy. She was extremely talented and also smart. Besides being a songwriter musician she is also an artist that does oil paintings. Her paintings have sold for tens of thousands of dollars each in the past. I'm glad I took the time and efforts to listen to this show. Super intriguing story that answers some questions but there are still many unanswered.

I am blown away by the evocative nature of her songs. Her lyrics are subtle but profound. One can indeed detect the air that Mississippi offers. Her songs take us into a rarefied domain not evident anywhere else. Bobbie Gentry, where are you?

She is a timeless talent. Doesn’t have to rely on her looks she’s so talented. None of the contemporaries compare to her. Unique.

I was always intrigued by the music of Bobbie Gentry. Growing up in the South and my youth years during the 60s and 70s there was a lot of great music then. Ode To Billy Joe is one of my all time favorites.

Lost recordings of the BBC’s Bobbie Gentry Show (Long John Baldry, Donovan and the Hollies featured) discovered in colour too, re-mastered and broadcast in the UK November 2023.

B.G. is a beautiful, talented lady.  Great narrating job by Rosanne Cash.  She has the pedigree of being Johnny Cash's daughter, and a considerable musical talent in her own right.
