  When musicians say they don't know theory, what they mean is don't know the technical terms for what they are doing. They learn from listening to other music and learning other peoples songs. The end result is the same.  The difference is,  a person with knowledge of theory calls a particular trick like changing keys, modulation, while a person with no knowledge learns the trick from a Beatles song or wherever. I'm a musician myself and any others I have known are the same. Got into theory later on in life as it's quite interesting.

  Most of the songs on 'The Masterplan' are great! Between 1993 and 1997 Noel was a songwriting machine!

  You fish in your own subconscious, which reconfigures everything you hear. I understand him well. The melody comes to me unconsciously, and the chords are the frame of the picture.

  When you learn guitar on acoustic you learn all the open chords, G, C, D, E,F, A , B7 and minor variations, it doesn’t take too much longer to work out how they go together.

  Noel is the champion of taking samples of other artists to make his songs, but in the end he admitts he pays for doing so and there&apos;s no fuzz. I remember an interview in which he said he was angry because someone copied a song of his and then the interviewer says &quot;but you do that all the time&quot; Noel answers &quot;but at least I pay to use other people&apos;s stuff&quot;

  I’ve noticed that musicians who write from a place of music theory tend to write technically impressive but emotionally flat music, and those who write from instinct instead of theory tend to write more interesting and emotionally resonant music. Obviously there are exceptions in either case. I find music theory fascinating, but when I pick up a guitar or sit down at a keyboard, I’m not thinking about it
