I don't care if she has to refer to the lyric sheets. With that voice, she can do whatever she wants :-).

Ella was born in 1917 so she’s around 58 years old when this was performed. Just amazing! No auto tune. Phrasing, Pitch, Timing, Technical prowess all on point. This lady was AWESOME! I still listen to her recordings from her youth and am just blown away by her virtuosity.

It's refreshing to see a legend and all-time great like Ella have to look at the lyric sheet to see the lyrics. For those of you who never went to school for Jazz, it's considered all but shameful to look at the sheets. Although I have plenty of tunes memorized, I never thought it was a big deal, and still look at sheets at gigs. Never understood that stance.

3 million views for Susan Boyle and 100K for this one. . . goes to show the power of the media. Ella and Joe are geniuses at what they do, and they both improvise inside the context of this tune. If only they had the exposure that Susan had. . . .
I can only speak for Joe, because I knew him, but he was not rolling in the dough.
He was a national treasure one of the great masters of the guitar. But the culture does not value or know the value of the real thing when it comes to jazz.
