Mustard, Pickles, Swiss all Germanic ingredients. I like how this video shows this in a diagram. Mention this among South Floridians and they’ll deny it… attack you and try to tell you the entire sandwich comes from Latin origins.

I remember as a kid going to Silver Ring and they would have entire cabinets stuffed with premade sandwiches for the workers to come buy. I’m talking hundreds. Sold out every day.

I lived in Tampa for a year. Carmens in Ybor city was where I had my first Cuban sandwich. The black beans and rice with Texas Pete was great as well.

The iconic end-to-end point-to-point cut is visually pleasing to look at. Just as, the taste and flavor profiles from the bread, meats cheese and mustard. As a poor Cuban migrant farmer, just 4 yrs old with a Cuban sandwich, Cuban coffee and a Cuban cigar on your ten minute lunch break was the only thing to look forward to.

My Cuban grandfather would buy the Cuban bread ,my grandmother would make the ‘pernil’ w|c is the roasted pork ,they would put the sliced ham ,they would put slices of left over turkey ,emmental cheese , dill pickle ,and mustard …heated up ,and I would eat it with mariquitas , mariquiras are banana chips … the best this was in the 1960’s
