  What I find sinister about Malcolm is that in the opening montage, there was a clear progression with all the women: they started out smiling, happy, then more upset, irritable, hints the relationship was failing. To me, it seemed he had a pattern where, once he no longer wanted to be with them, he would sacrifice his partner. Reinforced by the Peggy Lee song he plays when they first arrive and when he believes Liz is dying, with the recurring line &quot;I don&apos;t like you anymore&quot; sticking out. Frankly, there was nothing to stop him from staying with Liz while luring other random women like his brother. Instead he chooses to end it this way, perhaps because this allows him to &quot;keep&quot; them--the way he displays Liz&apos;s painting on the same weekend he intends to kill her, the way he meticulously stores mementos of his victims in boxes, and the way he literally keeps the creature that&apos;s an amalgamation of all these women hidden in his attic.

  I kind of assumed that some of the honey the children preserved the mothers head in was also used in the cake. Thats why it tastes awful. Thats why the souls are trapped. The children must have trapped the mothers soul or magic or whatever within the honey. Thats my weird ass theory anyway 😂

  Baking and witchcraft go together pretty deeply. I’d say that cake acted more like a test on her ability to absorb the spell ( drugs). Cakes like that are used to identify a witch. She handled it, devoured it because it had no hard hold on her. If he took a bite…..

  I appreciate you saying the movies may not click right now but later they may. One of my high school English lit teachers always would say, when we hated a text, is we didn&apos;t appreciate it right now but that didn&apos;t mean we couldn&apos;t revisit it and see if we had gained a better understanding

  I think for me, in hindsight at least, their relationship feeling so stilted despite supposedly having been going on for a year made sense. She could never really get as close to him because he was always hiding this massive secret, and in turn he could never get as close to her because at the end of the day she wasn&apos;t a person to him she was a sacrifice for his gain. <br><br>That being said, this wasn&apos;t a perfect movie by any means, but I did end up being one of the people who this really worked for. &nbsp;I found the imagery really striking, and Tatiana Maslany is, as many other commenters have already said, the best part of every project she is in. Loved the use of the Peggy Lee song throughout too! &nbsp;<br><br>As always though, an excellent review! Any time I see something in theaters these days I find myself equally as excited to get your thoughts on the film as I am to see it in the first place.

  Personally, I’ve been really loving Osgood Perkins’s stuff because it has exactly that sort of weird imagery and off-beat progression that my nightmares have. I definitely get why his movies don’t work for other people who want better building/progression and a more satisfying mystery/explanation, but for me it means his movies are immersive on a level I don’t get from other horror.

  According to a bunch of Letterboxd reviews I read, the cake has bones in it. All I could tell when I saw it is it looked like there might be blood in it. But going off the bone comments, I wonder if they were the bones of the previous victim. That would also add to the generational horror and cycle of it.
