No matter if you're growing with salt or organic, Your first step in growing big roots starts in the very beginning, before pot up. And that is bringing your media up to the proper moisture level with a witch's brew in a tote, before you pot up.
Here's my witch's brew:
1. Compost/EWC Tea It is made from my earthworm castings, which are far more nutritionally dense than store bought, but I'm after the microbes and other hormones more than nutrition. The last two hours of the brew, I add whatever inoculate I'm using that particular round. The last couple of grows, I added both inoculates that I alternate between waterings in a grow. For the biodiversity I use Rootwise Complete and Recharge.

All the other ingredients are added after tea is ready and just before application.
2. I also make SST, sprouted seed tea. I use organic non GMO2 row barley. You malt, sprout, the seeds. It's the exact same procedure that Beer brewers use. Lots of videos out there on how to do it. You take those sprouted seeds and add a bit of water and blend it together. Being careful to keep the temperature down in order not to destroy the hormones. This is an extremely potent root growth hormone.

3. 1/2 dose of Green Leaf Nutrients Sea Kelp. Again not for a nutritional need, but for the growth hormones. It is an extremely potent extract with no heavy metal problems at all! It makes an excellent foliar spray also!

4. High quality soy aminos. The Aminos are there to help young root system uptake the nutrients and hormones.

I pot up that freshly mixed media and immediately transplant my seedling or clone. If I'm running organically, I also administer my first top dressing, Sprinkle some cover crop on top and scratch in, cover with straw and moisten it all down.
Your roots now have the perfect environment to explore!
A little prep and planning before planting, makes an absolutely huge difference!

Smallest pot I ever used was in a drip rockwool/ clay bead setup I made from 4" ABS/PVC pipe with Tees to hold the pots. The plants were in marshmallow fluff containers that I melted the bottoms like a spiderweb. The plastic 16 oz. fluff container carries 32 fl. oz. and they stuffed in a 4"Tee tight so it made a great limited height closet system. I hit the irrigation once an hour for 2 minutes using a crude timer I made. Roots ended up growing down the pipes in the direction of the water flow. They kinda looked like lion's mane mushrooms when I pulled the fluff pots out at harvest. Not too unlike the DWC setups but better groomed. Tubular

Thanks Scottie. I use Fox Farm and was criticized by another DGC member. Felt like I was doing something wrong.

I'm doing 65 gallon grass root pots with one plant indoors seems to be the sweet spot. Idk I haven't gone bigger yet but I've completely filled them with roots before.600 watts. Peak growth they take 6-9 gallons every 3-4 days. this round the plants have been drinking a ton. I sow them in 5 gallons and transplant around week 6 to the big pots. Think I may get a two pounder this round fingers crossed.
