    Thank you for your question. Yes, I agree - it’s certainly a problem if a 5-card suit is too weak to rebid, but with 2+ honours in the suit then I’m reasonably content to rebid it. If it’s any weaker, I’d want 6 cards for sure, so would be wary of opening with 5. As ever, it helps if opener and partner have the same understanding!

    I have had the barrier explained to me but never understood till now that you "must" bid above it to show strength to your partner. Aha - now it makes sense! In your demo hand though, I can't see how you can say with such confidence that the partnership will only lose AK of clubs. Are you able to give a quick explanation of how you would play that hand to get that result? Thank you for your excellent lessons, they are very helpful and I'm sure I'll be replaying them many times.

    Good explanation. However if you have a weak opening hand and can't reverse, and end up rebidding your opening suit, doesn't that imply holding 6 of that suit?
