As a former roller coaster ride op, thank you for properly showing this stuff. A lot of media misrepresents how coasters actually work which can lead to a lot of fear around them, but they're actually incredibly robust. I loved that you showed the history too including Thompson's Switchback Railway - it's hard to find proper models/references for what that would've looked like in operation. Overall - very well done video. +1 sub.

One thing I want to add is that the anti-roll-back dogs are typically used in pairs for redundancy, as only one dog is more than capable to hold the train.

For those of you who are unfamiliar, a block zone is a section of ride that only one train may occupy at a time. At the end of a block zone there is a method to stop the train in case the block zone ahead is still occupied. This is the safety system that prevents rollercoaster trains from colliding with one another.

Coaster nerd here 🙋 You absolutely nailed this, great job. It's incredible to see how much coaster technology has advanced, particularly with magnetic launches. Kingda Ka used a hydraulic launch which is so complex it probably deserves a video all to itself. It had a lot of moving parts and was extremely expensive to maintain which is why this system is also being replaced by magnetic launches such as those on Falcon's Flight.

Great video!! One correction I’d like to make is that over-the-shoulder restraints are not necessarily a more evolved version of lap bars. We are actually generally past the era of over-the-shoulder restraints, and most modern looping coasters do use lap bars, often even without seatbelts. All restraints must be compliant with rigorous standards depending on the forces that are exerted by the particular ride, and you’re just as safe in a modern lap bar than you are in an over-the-shoulder restraint.

The same point applies to hydraulic restraints vs. mechanic/ratcheting restraints. For example, modern B&M coasters, including their Giga coasters, use ratcheting lap bars. And lap bars can be hydraulic, such as modern RMC, Intamin and Mack lap bars.

Plus, there are many mechanics that can launch a train, including hydraulics (Kingda Ka), pneumatics (compressed air), drive tires, LIMs (linear induction motors, the predecessor to the LSM featured in this video which used a lot more electricity), flywheels, and weight drops.

I love how using the Arch as a size reference means nothing to probably like 99% of the viewers, but to us few in the STL area it's a welcome reference!

In Brazil it's called "Montanha Russa" which is literally Russian Mountain... I never knew how accurate the name was lol. Thank you!
