I love the surprise ending, when we’re expecting him to bring the painting in, and it’s his sister instead. It always gets me. 😭

Right at the end of the 1st movie Robert is sat in his customary seat at the diner with his book, his tea and everything in it's place, but, he's logged in to a laptop viewing an advert he placed on a messaging service and someone replying, it says this..
"Posted 2 hours ago"
"Got a problem? Odds against you? Call the Equalizer" (This is a nod to the 80's series, the exact same advert is posted in newspapers with a contact number.)
"I'm in trouble. Can you help?"

and Robert types
"Yes," and hits send..
He's gone freelance, using his skills to help the helpless..

Harking back the lines said by Susan and her Husband Brian before Robert leaves in the 1st movie
Susan "I know part of you died when Vivian did, but not the part She loved the most.... Go be him.."
Brian "Were you able to help him?"
Susan "He didn't come for help, He came for permission.."
That sent Robert down the path to where we find him in this movie.
Robert stops hiding and starts acting on Susans words, realising Vivian would approve of what he's doing, Not condemn him, that's why he looks at the floor and says "I'm sorry" after killing the people in the resteraunt.
It's Vivian he's apologosing to, for breaking his word to leave THAT past behind him..

One of Denzel's iconic roles - the finger guns is chef's kiss and that preceding line "I'm going to kill each and every one of you, and the only disappointment in it for me is that I only get to do it once" is so hardcore sublime. Speaking of sublime the series the film is adapting was just that. Also the speech he gives to Miles "YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT DEATH IS!!" always gets me. Pt. 3 is solid.

In the original 80s show, upon which the films are based, he was an elderly retired CIA agent who sought out people to help (usually free of charge) in order to pay for what he felt were his sins while working for the agency. In the TV show he rarely ever killed anyone and most of the fighting was done by a younger associate. His contribution was his vast knowledge of surveillance and tactics. At the end of the first movie it showed his iconic newspaper ad from the TV show "Got a Problem? Odds against you? Call the Equalizer."

38:24 Some people are surprised at the explosion that happened there. Turns out flour is highly combustible. A room full of flour everywhere could blow up an entire house. That is why flour mills even today have strict policy against open fires since that flour dust gets everywhere.

The book was there in the beach house because it's the one his wife was reading when she died. He hasn't moved it. Those were her glasses he picked up from the table. The chairs they were sitting in at the window are where he and his wife used to sit.
