  My 1st husband was a born in Dundee, Scotland, and true to his roots. Accent and all. He was also a professional bagpiper. And heaven forbid that his kilt wasn't fitting correctly. We lived in the Los Angeles area and attended every competition in California and a few other states. The only time he made a mistake and embarrassed the hell out of him was after a formal Scottish dinner. We were engaged, but not yet married. So we danced to the reels and such. Afterwards, his grandfather approached him and softly told him that dancing with a betrothed lass, with his sporran in front instead of at the side, was like telling everyone at the dance that he had already "taken my innocence!" He blushed beet red, and I laughed myself to tears. He was kidded for many years after that faux pas. 🤣😂

  I was at a Tartan Parade.  It was a bit chilly and one dude wore long underwear under his kilt.  Literally everyone there made a remark, even the women.  I was plenty warm with just my kilt and hose.  Never underestimate the wool!

  Ive totally worn my sporran way to low. A nice older man showed me how to put the chains over the buckles and made my day a lot easier. I shortened the chain when I got home. The only other faux-pas that I can think of is - kilt-pin through both layers, or droopy kilt hose (I keep a couple rubber bands in my sporran just incase my hose keeps falling).

  My grandmother came to the USA in 1916 after the assassination of her parents,grandparents and great grandfather … she had a solid tan kilt with the what I think was a sash same color leather belts and other clan accessories , I was 5 years old when our house burned down in 1966,but I remember my father taking everything grandma brought from Ireland in her sea chest . The sword and pike were very cool things to a 5 year old that’s why I remember it I guess,later that year our house burned down burnt down we lost everything as a family

  I had family telling me what to do, and then bandmates helping me along.  Our Pipe Sergeant was really into dress & deportment (military stuff, band uniform, etc.) that the only thing I needed help with was those silly shoe strings on my Gillies.  What a pain!  They aren't supposed to be tied all the way up the leg, but I do see it a lot.

  I&apos;ve seen plenty of fashion tragedies, from the tacky &quot;kilts with crocs, tube socks and polo shirts&quot;, the &quot;I made this myself!&quot; guys, to the random Acrylic Highland Reenactor with his German Zweihander... all the way to a Prince Charlie with a Utili-kilt. <br><br>I. Have. Seen. Some. Stuff. <br><br>The Worst faux pax that I&apos;ve encountered is getting this good advice and being too arrogant to listen to the advice. I&apos;ve had a fellow boldly declare that they <b>preferred</b> the pleats up front, and that they&apos;ll wear it the way they want, even going so far as to do so for the remainder of the event. <br><br>Most folks are happy to have a conversation about it so long as you&apos;re cool with them when you spot something like this. Part of supporting a positive kilting experience is to be conversational and gentle when you interact with someone who thinks they&apos;re dressed like a boss. A lot of the time, they didn&apos;t ask for your advice, so one must remember to broach the subject with tact. As well, being able to take the conversation when it&apos;s being offered as constructive criticism (or not!).

  I was lucky the first time I wore a kilt. I connect to three Clans and chose one of their Tartans. A friend of mine was highly involved with the Scottish Games in my area. He is Scottish but grew up in England. He helped and guided me in choosing all of the accoutrements and instructed me in the proper way to dress. I received numerous compliments that day.
