Well, that was a fun video, thanks.

How did you came up with an idea to make this channel? Did you check up YT first to see if anyone is telling stories about mainframes, Crays, etc yet of not to decide if you had to step in yourself?

The chap has forgot to stress more the use vases for the VM line.

The regular mainline OS was already good in multitasking/multiuser, so you could run lots of things without ever needing any virtualization. But still, there were cases when you did actually need it.

You maybe forgot to mention the giant industry of the Soviet clones of this software.

Someone in the USSR was such a fan of the IBM approach that the country has axed almost all of its own quite impressive and massive efforts in computer architectures in favour of just using IBM’s, and producing custom branches, configurations, updates out of that. Nowadays computer scientists see it as a strategic mistake, but such is the history.

    A FUN fact:

The whole 31-bit nonsense came to be not because programmers/architects were forgetting that “unsigned int” type exists but because committees that have managed things like ANSI C were wobbly on keeping the consistency of this type versus “signed short” type. So it all came to the 31-bit limit on the “just to be safe” principle, even though it is absurd for memory/file systems as those values can not go negative.

THIS is a great video, thanks.

BTW, could you pick up a system like AS/400 in some thrift store to disassemble it, show all of the hardware, and reassemble and run it?

A modern laptop pc of today is more powerful than this mainframe.

I still think the high-water-mark on OS name length and unnecessary redundancy has to go to IBM's OS/VS2 MVS/ESA, which IBM noted was an acronym, the full legal name being: Operating System/Virtual Storage 2 Multiple Virtual Storage/Extended System Architecture.

81 characters WITHOUT spaces, and "System," "Virtual," and "Storage" occurring twice. You could not fit the OS Name, on a punch card.

2025, still 64 bit. It shows that IBM doesn't do any hardware anymore and relevancy has become low.
