As for the Sonic CD sound test Easter egg, the song used on that screen is just the boss theme. In the US, a different soundtrack was used than the Japanese/European release. The US soundtrack, for whatever reason, got that really creepy song as the boss theme.

No one ever seems to mention that the creepy music played on the Sonic CD screen is from the boss music. That's why it's so different in America. The whole soundtrack was redone.
