I was 17 and living in Auckland but the Games transfixed the whole country. Dick Taylor's heroics in the 10,000m and who could forget John Walker and Filbert Bayi battling it out for the 1500m gold. Bayi won but both athletes broke the then world record (held by Jim Ryun of the US). Simpler, happier times.

Lived here pretty much my entire life, love the place and remember the 70s and 80s burning our arses on vinyl car seats in summer listening to the radio, freezing our arses off walking to school in winter. It was and to a degree a beautiful city.

I was born in Christchurch but moved up to Porirua, Wellington in the late 1960s. We flew down to Christchurch in 1974, on an NAC about the same time as Norman Kirk hearse from Wellington which was also arriving from Wellington some days after we arrived from Wellington. It was the Commonwealth Games year, and I was attending Waltham Primary school, right across from my Aunty's house, where we were staying for the year 1974. We returned to Wellington in 1975. We migrated to Brisbane, Australia in 1981 when Robert Muldoon was PM and the 1981 Springbok tour was causing a lot of riots up and down New Zealand. We have never returned to NZ to live, except I attended Aotea College 1983-85 and Victoria University in 1990-92. But, this is the Christchurch I recall as a child, and the last impression I still have of Christchurch to this day. I lived in a few places but never Christchurch since 1974.

Funny thing is as a Samoan, this is the Samoan Village I was born in. Christchurch, New Zealand, back in the 1960s. As they say, you can take the boy from the Village, but you cant take Village out of the Boy. 🤣 Well, I am 100% Samoan and I am as dark brown skinned as they come. But, this is the Village I was brought up in.

My mother was a young Samoan Lady from Samoa, My father was also a Samoan from Samoa studying at Saint Bedes College, in Christchurch, before attending Canterbury University in Christchurch when he met Mum. Yeah, like that. He returned to Samoa, and Mum remained with my Sister and I in tow. 😄

I was 21. My dad was a referee for the cycling events and a very close friend was the design and construction engineer for the athletics track. That promoted a business throughout Australasia in synthetic sports surfacings which he developed and I worked in until I retired. Very happy days. Thanks for the memories.

I arrived in Christchurch from Canada in 1974, just before the Commonwealth Games, looked for and found a job. Got involved in a few things, three sports and other things. Met hundreds of people, many of whom are still friends! Didn't become famous, more like INFAMOUS among many who know me, but grew to love the city - and I'm still here 52 years later!! Been around the world nearly 5 times, but haven't found another city I'd rather live in! Very interesting video. Colour TV just started during the games, and I believe the first sporting event shown in colour in NZ was Dick Tayler's magnificent run in the 10,000 metres, which I remember watching at Beath's appliance department!! I met him in later years in the Canterbury Supporters Club. Once I got to know more about the city and province it didn't take much to convince me to become a Cantabrian - supposedly one-eyed - but I used to tell outsiders that I was a two-eyed Cantabrian - I had one Red one, and one Black one, like everyone else around here!! 👹👹👹👹

I was 21 and I enjoyed my beer at the Bush Inn tavern with my pal Richard Middlemiss, coach and manager Mohammed and Elias from Tanzania. We met Jeff Capes, the English shotputter, and he was a large gentleman with massive wrists.

I was 6yrs old.. I remember walking to school, & on those winter days where the city would get that low slung foggy cloud over the city for a week or so, but you had the old gas works down on Moorhouse Ave & you could taste the oil or something nasty in the air.. Lungs burning, stung the inside of ya nose at times.. But still wonderful times..
