-Play through the whole beat right up to the next one. Mess with staccato notes after that<br><br>-Keep your fingers moving. Don’t “arm” them to strike the next note<br><br>-Lead with your left hand, react with your right hand<br><br>-Use the ride as reference, or the idea of a ride, as reference for attack and decay. <br><br>Marvelous video, gentlemen! You saved a lot of players a lot of years and heartache in swing and groove!

I wonder if that connected concept relates to eighth notes for other instruments as well. The whole “late, straight, and connected” concept of eighth notes. I wish that jazz guitarists went into this type of nuance when talking about rhythm and time feel. Great video. Good to see you two on YouTube with the podcast again!

This conversation brings the great Charlie Haden to mind. He was one of the kings of legato bass lines, even the notes he chose seemed to prioritize the consistent droning nature of legato playing!

Nice discussion. The best way to cultivate tones that completely "fill" the space is to work with the bow.. Of course, not all notes are broad, legato, etc. One needs a balance between long and short, loud and soft, simple and complex, florid and spacious, etc. This balance is not necessarily 50/50. It constantly shifts according to the demands and needs of the music.
