Leopard Geckos & Humidity: Are We Doing It WRONG?!

Considering something like 50% of all posts on the Leopard Gecko subreddit have something to do with shedding-related ailments, I'd say we absolutely aren't meeting their humidity requirements on average.

Honestly, if it was you against every care guide in the world, I would go with you!  You're so thoughtful and so aware of your animals and their needs and behaviors.  Input from people like you has changed and needs to keep changing the herpetological landscape.  Keep up the great work!!  ❤️

Mine thrives with at least 40% humidity during the day, and it raises naturally to 60-70% at night. Humidity lower than 40% during the day, and she starts to become dehydrated and spends all her time in the humid hide. When I mist the tank in the early morning, it seems to be her primary way of drinking; she sits in the  area where the slate stone is wet and licks her mouth and face more than anything.  (consider how and when dew forms on the grass).

Humidity in the Philippines almost never goes as low as 40%, and we never have problems with respiratory infections among Leopard Geckos. And because of our humidity, we also have no shedding issues

I'm a part of an advanced leopard gecko group lot of herpetologists etc and they've always recommended 45-65%, my gecko stays between this for the last 3 years and has been thriving

People keep forgetting that leopard geckos aren't actually desert animals. Even monsoon rains are common in their natural habitat!

Since I changed the terrariums to bioactive with lots of plants, the leo geckos haven‘t got any shedding problems. They also don‘t spend much time on the dryer side, although they have hides everywhere.

the way I think about it is that in the wild every now and then it will rain so when I mist their enclosures I like to think that its raining for them. so humidity spikes every now and then just makes sense.

My hunch is they need more humidity than we realize but my big question is at what point is it too much?  Percentage? Length of time?  At what point does it cause respiratory infection?…. Also curious to me that the humid hides are, what, 80 something percent?  And they don’t get infection…. And I’ve wondered too do we need a dry hide at the same temp gradient because what if they need the temp but not the humidity at some times?

I also think very deep substrate would be interesting and enriching for geckos, whether it's for digging, using the heat variation, or for being able to grow plants more easily
