You could be in a different country. Sitting here in 30 degrees heat. Will be visiting Deal next week, come rain or shine😅

Always loved Deal.

Each Sunday afternoon, during the 1980s, after a walk up the Needle (The Dover Patrol Monument) in St Margaret's Bay, family would drive to Deal to have tea at the Lobster Pot. Small cafe with linoleum flooring, on the seafront. There were some local characters, I recall a retired gentleman who had been working in a nearby colliery. He always had much to say. There was an amusing wooden seagull attached to the ceiling, I wonder if it is still there! And pictures of storms or fish caught on the wall. There was also a cinema in Queen's Street which closed during the Miner's Strikes. Some good showings, notably "Return of the Jedi" in 1983 which I did attend with children from my village school.

However, back then, Deal had little to no social scene, barely a high street, no industry (except the odd fishing trawler) a few pubs and that's it! It's something many at the Royal Marines School of Music complained about when stationed there (and which is why the 1989 IRA bombing was such a shock to the local community). There was (and still is) little to do in Deal with cold, long, dark wet winters and frequent storms in the Channel the norm.

Lost in time indeed....

My great-grandfather was from 'Deel' -- Did Deal used to be spelled 'Deel?' It was def'ly in Kent. Thanks for the great vid! J from Chicago.

Looking forward to you going to Hythe. So many interesting places. And you’ll feel like a young man compared to most of the residents hehehe the butcher is good, shame the sausage lady butcher closed a few years ago though.

I really like this format, just wandering and looking especially in winter when it’s quiet.

I liked that format because it allows for serendipity. And because it's what I do these days. Dashing around to see the approved sights is a thing of the past for me.

Hi Tudor
A great half hour this format is more enjoyable in lots of ways, if you do another house or a castle then you can go into the history of the place. Hot Chocolate and Carrot cake Tudor, I thought you were on a diet I hope the Carrot cake was sugar free. Fish and Chips is a english dish not Curry. Cakes we shouldn`t be looking in these shops keep clear. 🤨👍
