I'm not worried about finding meaning when there's no jobs. I'm worried about finding money. I don't any meaning from work. I get meaning from doing stuff I want to do.

This is a particularly good example of how much Brian Greene contributes to the value of interviews by making insightful comments and asking penetrating, challenging questions. I would have taken away an entirely different perspective from this if I’d only heard Marcus’ ideas. And somehow he does it without taking the whole thing over like most interviewers do.

I got into YouTube 20+ years ago thanks to Brian Greene and World Science Festival. Would secretly watch the videos and nerd out. Such an awesome guy and love seeing him still at it for the fans and lovers of learning today!

While I studied guitar in my 20s, then trombone in my 30s, I did nothing for 35 years, then at 68yo restarted trombone, added French Horn (now 8 yrs), and 2.5 yrs ago, I added Oboe. I'm not any kind of genius but I practice all 3 instruments every day for 2 hours each. At 75, I play in 2 community bands & a community orchestra.

I think the reason it's possible to question if creativity is simply recombining different ideas is because we live in the time we do. That is, we live in a time in which humans have just figured out so much stuff. We're not constantly having to invent new things to survive; that impetus was largely the burden of our forebearers. Most creative foundations have long since been established. An example would be: At some point in the past, there was no such thing as a murder mystery story or a science-fiction story. In the past, no one knew how to make cheesecake. If you've ever looked at a recipe or process and asked yourself, "How the hell did they ever come up with that?", that's something LLMs are not able to do. Because for true invention, it's about bouncing new information against one's world model and inducing elements that are not strictly surface level - an acknowledgement that there's something deeper still, to be unlocked and used.<br><br>For most of human activity, there is a lot of recombination.<br>But that's because true invention beyond what is available today is just harder to achieve. <br>In the past, that wouldn't have been true.

Ask someone what they did last summer, and you will often hear hallucinations. People constantly misremember facts and events.

I took up banjo in my early 40s and got very little satisfaction trying to memorize songs. It felt very paint by number. Then a few years ago, I focused on scales and diatonic triads where you could go up and down the neck using different roll patterns. I could totally improvise and produce stuff that is purely my own. Way more satisfying obviously.
