Hi Ruth, I live on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia and some of the people who were 'cleared' from Canna in the early 1800s came to our area -- a family of MacDonalds here are known as the 'Cannaich' MacDonalds. We were in Scotland last summer and bought John Lorne Campbell's book. He and his wife made many visits to Nova Scotia and Cape Breton collecting Gaelic songs here that survived among the descendants of the Canna, Eigg, Rum and Hebridean people. What a beautiful tour you gave -- informative and delightful, and thanks for all the hiking you do to show us the places you visit.

Ripping! This episode had it all: train, ferry, camp, Gaelic, seaweed salad, puffins, a band, churches, a castle.

Such a nice trip down memory lane for me! As a young lad my family sailed the Western Isles every year and Canna was always a favourite place to visit. The first time we anchored there, maybe when I was 10 or 12, John Lorne Campbell came alongside our boat to gift us a couple of fine crabs he had caught.
The following day we were walking ashore and he invited us into his house where we met his wife Margaret, and after a fabulous afteroon tea she showed us her butterfly collection and many more interesting items. Yes, even as a youngster I was deeply moved by all this and I still have a fondness for that beautiful island, 60 years on.

Ruth, Ruth, Ruth -- sheesh! Just about every place you go in Scotland gets added to my "I'm going to retire *HERE*" list! So many of these places are charming, out of the way, calm and quiet, but at the same time welcoming....

Hi Ruth, National Trust membership costs £96 for an individual per year and here are some of the benefits from having a National Trust membership. Free entry to more than 500 places National Trust care
Free parking at most National Trust car parks
National Trust Handbook, full of information about the places the National Trust look after
National Trust Magazine three times a year,
Access to online Members' area, full of first look previews and behind-the-scenes features. I hope you find this useful. The parking one might be worth it and the free entry to 500 places. Also if you are under 26 it is only £48 per year. Hope you find this useful. :)
