Some places in the wilderness carry a heaviness you never forget. Stories like this remind you how unsettling nature can really be.

The strange hermit has vibes of one of my hiking experiences in my area. About 8-9 miles out in the woods in the mountains, a guy steps out of nowhere way ahead of me, turns towards me and yells, “leave me alone” and walks back into the hills in the woods. Never saw him over the next two days.

The wilderness can be beautiful—but also unforgiving in ways you can’t predict.

If this was real, they would’ve put his search out for his gear. Camera gear generally has the photographers name set in it to add it to the metadata. Somebody took his gear, apparently in the story and it would probably wouldn’t be too too hard to find if they actually searched.

That's why you never go hiking without a pistol and a shotgun. When I   take my shotgun with three full boxes of solid slugs and two full drums. I take both my fourty fives with eight clips each. I take my back up .40 with six full clips. And strung on my back tied to the side of my pack is my AR 15 with six full drums. I would rather carry all that weight and not need it than not have it and run into some crazies out there, which has happened to me several times around the cascade mountains and around Mt. Rainier in washington state. You rarely need your weapons for the wildlife, but 98% of the time, you find the crazies and need to defend yourself . They say no weapons allowed in the state parks. Well, the crazies don't play by the rules. Therefore, I take my shit with me. It has saved me many times, plus the parks don't have that many Rangers working anymore, so it's easy to just skate right in. I'm not putting my life on the line for some rules the crazies don't follow, so I refuse to get terrorized for not having a way to defend myself.
