A big reason a functioning M1918 BAR is so rare despite the numbers produced is because the receiver is constructed out of an alloyed metal, of which for the longest time was a classified composition. The metal does not take to welding at all, so those who re-weld chopped up receivers to revive destroyed historic guns are unable to put them back together. I wonder how these short-pulse type welders could have changed things.
