You may not need to scrap those linkages after all. linkages you used are commonly used in combat robot shufflers! Typically we use 3 or more linkages because with just 2, the mechanism binds too badly. The addition of a third linkage allows you to make the phase offset 60 degrees rather than 90. As a result you always have 2 linkages pushing even if one binds. It works well with tight or sloppy fits.

The fact that it rotates at all means you’re closer to making it work than you think

Watched this with my morning coffee, and now I’m emotionally invested in a bronze linkage that never stood a chance. Honestly, this whole build felt like watching a well-dressed man slip on ice, graceful, impressive, and doomed from the start. The “box of shame” is starting to look more like a retirement home for beautiful ideas that didn’t quite pay rent. Can’t wait to see what you overengineer next!

Cant wait for the worm gear episode.

I know its unsatisfying, but mated worm gears on a shaft, are probably the correct way to do this, as it doesnt allow backfeeding (the spindle making the worm gear turn rather than the other eay around)

AND the handle for controlling the worm gear will be in the right spot, with all your other handles.

AND you can make a fancy indexer on the handle if you wish.

BONUS!

You could put a cute little geared setup, on the worm gear shaft to its handle, to make it needlessly complicated.

I like that you put "failures" online. it shows we arent all perfect at creating working devices each and every time.

I think a worm drive system, with two pinions driven by a common worm shaft, is the way to go. And it fits in with the way everything on a lathe works, feeds and cross slides and all that. In particular, it's easy to account for any backlash in the worm the same way you account for backlash in any other lathe motion. And yeah, cutting a worm wheel isn't easy, but wouldn't it be fun to learn?

I find this video unsatisfying - not because you failed, but because it’s not clear why you failed. I really hope you figure out what went wrong. It feels so close to working.
