Just doing hobby farming in the backyard is labor intensive. Respect to the people that work hard on a larger scale.

Social media has definitely romanticized even small homesteading... We started dairy goats for our own family two years ago, just two does. Those goats cost so much money, but more importantly I went into this thinking "I am smart, I will focus on doing this as best as I possibly can and everything will work out!"<br><br>Uhm, no. Turns out, NOTHING replaces experience! We have had so many examples of things being missed or not noticed in time, simply because I didn't know what I was looking for. Diseases, pathogens, parasites, weight issues, poisonous plants, infections, injuries. You name it...<br><br>I don't say this to discourage people from starting a small homestead, because gaining this knowledge over the last two years is simply invaluable to me (I'm still a beginner!!). I say it to point out that if <b>I'm</b> struggling with two goats, those huge dairy family farms deserve an extreme amount of credit and money. Vote with your dollar, y'all!

Thanks for this video! Don't feel uncomfortable. I wondered about Ballerina Farms - this explains a lot and brings clarity. Your honest assessment is so refreshing.

I was watching a farmer’s market youtuber out of Tennessee growing and harvesting on his 1 acre farm, then realized a lot of the things he was selling he didn’t actually grow on his farm, nor was there really much room to store it either. I realized he was harvesting some of his own crops, but supplementing that with produce he was buying in bulk and repackaging it for a Saturday market, all claimed to be organic. Who even knows what the country of origin was for what he’s buying in? But he displayed everything at his market booth claiming it was grown on his farm. And his prices were crazy too! When I questioned him on it he just smugly stated it was his job to sell to the rich! So I suspect there is a LOT of fraud and misrepresentation going on in the farmer’s markets and farm gate stores with very little oversight.

Love, love, love ALL this!! Small dairy farmer in MN (with a setup stuck in the 90s, haha) and it is hard. Hard is an understatement. Your video made my day, thank you!

My personal take on the ballerina Farm situation is that they started out with a lot of money. They may or may not be making a big profit but when you start out with a lot of money doesn’t matter because it means your property is paid for and your Farm equipment is paid for.
