  As someone who hikes regularly I scream at the top of my lungs every outing, just hoping I’ll scare someone enough to be featured in a stupid YouTube video.

  My Dad was born & raised in Appalachia. As a teenager he was all over the mountains with just his hound dogs well into the early AM hours. He never had any scary encounters while out hunting throughout his childhood into near adulthood. Then when he was around 17 him and his best friend were out in the friend's front yard area hanging out, when the dogs started freaking tf out in the backyard. They both took off running to see what the commotion was and hit the area with their flashlights. They saw all the dogs lunging, growling, biting at this HUGE creature that was walking towards the tree line. The thing was mostly ignoring them as they circled, lunged, nipped, etc. but finally turned around long enough to scoop one up and throw it like a football across the yard. Then it quickly stepped across a barbed-wire fence like it wasn't even there and off into the woods. My Dad told me it was a really off white color around 8-9 ft. tall and just massive build. They grew up in the 60's and 70's in pretty extreme poverty, so neither one of them had grown up with much tv, or access to any info of what they had encountered. I guess it was around the later 70's after my Dad got out of the military and had met my Mom in Oklahoma and gotten married, that he finally began watching a lot of tv. It was then that he was watching an episode of In Search of... with Leonard Nimoy (Bigfoot episode), that he realized what he had encountered back when he was 17. Never doubted that experience that my Dad had, he was a straight-shooter. RIP I sure miss him.

  I live in Appalachia and can see parts of the Appalachian Trail from my house. We’re also pretty much living in Jefferson National Forest and everyone who lives here remembers this situation very well!   The town I used to live here is one of the closest towns for hikers on this part of the trail so there are hikers coming down all the time to shop or to bathe in the James River so we’re intimately familiar with this

  Part of the problem with the lore about the Appalachian Trail here in Appalachia is because there are so many hikers every season and criminals know this so they act like one of the hikers and just fit in and typically the hardcore hikers don’t ask too many questions because a lot of them hike this trail just to get away from their own problems! Those of us who live around here rarely go outside after dark without a 🔫! And there aren’t any grizzly bears anywhere near here! Just black bears, hogs, bobcats etc
