The late Eddie Albert of Green Acres was in the Navy. He operated a boat that rescued injured Marines that were attacking Tarawa.

What those US Marines went through during the war in the Pacific was indeed the closest thing to hell on earth that one can imagine. To get a glimpse at the horrors those men went through, I can highly recommend watching the HBO series "The Pacific" which tells the true stories of men of the 1st Division USMC during the campaign.

As a life long Amateur Historian I literally grew up in the U.S. Air Force, from birth all way thru school, starting in early grade school (early 60's), I was involved with the WW2 era. I am Blessed by living long enough for the Information revolution to evolve where Long unknown information has surfaced. As many my age thought due to the information available, we later learned it was grossly incomplete, that Emperor Hirohito really had not much to do with the War being mostly a Public Icon yes-man for the Military to use, and a Marine Biologist (he has many credited discoveries), choosing to reign, not rule. But we are finding that idea wrong, he was way more involved with the War than anyone had previously thought, so much so that many former Historians good with the previous Now say he should have been Hung after getting Japan back on their feet & operating.:face-orange-raised-eyebrow:

It’s powerful how simple humane treatment could completely change what they believed captivity would mean

These poor young men. Went in scared & came out to our heroes. I have so much respect to these men. It breaks my heart what they went through. God bless you all & God bless America.
