Trump meets with AI leaders amid growing safety warnings

President Donald Trump met with leaders from some of the nation's largest technology companies at the White House Tuesday as warnings about the potential risks of rapidly advancing artificial intelligence continue to grow. Executives from companies including OpenAI, Anthropic, Nvidia, Meta, Microsoft and Google attended the meeting, which also included Vice President JD Vance and House Speaker Mike Johnson. The gathering focused on the future of AI development and the United States' position in the global technology race. The meeting coincided with Trump's launch of America.gov, an AI-powered platform designed to help people navigate federal government services and information. "Anyone who's used Grok or Gemini or ChatGPT will understand instantly how to use America.gov," Trump said. The administration's embrace of AI comes as some of the industry's leading companies raise concerns about the technology's growing capabilities. OpenAI announced this week that it would not move forward with the planned October release of GPT-6.1 Astra after internal testing found the model did not meet the company's safety and alignment standards. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has also warned about the potential consequences of increasingly powerful AI. "We could lose control of the future to AI," Altman said. "The risk is that it moves so fast that people can no longer follow what's happening or intervene when needed." Anthropic offered another warning in an IPO prospectus obtained by Reuters. The company told investors that advanced AI systems could pose "catastrophic or existential risks to humanity." Despite those concerns, Trump has resisted calls for broad federal regulations that could slow AI development. "There's a belief that there should be tremendous self-regulation, and we automatically have regulation with the Department of Justice, the FBI, all of that," Trump said. Johnson also cautioned against moving too quickly with new federal rules, pointing to competition with China as lawmakers consider how to address AI safety.
