  My brother used to be a Martial Arts instructor. He used to know people who'd worked with Seagal. NO ONE had anything nice to say about the guy...!

  The more you try and prove you're a badass, the more you prove the opposite. I don't measer a person's toughness by how much they can dish out, but how much they can take. Let's say you have a guy with a knockout punch. He's knocked out dosens of fighters, and won titles with it. Then one night, it's not enough. He lands it perfectly, but his opponent gets back up before the 10 count. Now THAT'S a tough SOB. Steven Segal is all about delivering the pain, while never receiving any. He probably hasn't been in any real fights. Neither professional, nor street. Aside from hurting people, he wants the reputation. He may have known that he couldn't defeat Van DAMN, or he may have been uncertain. But I believe his reputation was what he feared for. He wants everyone to believe that nobody has a chance against him. If he lost to Van Damn, his reputation is ruined. Even if he won, but Van Damn still landed a few shots, that would be more than Segal's ego could take. Because it would reveal that he can be hurt, and ultimately defeated. Then he'd be less feared. That's his biggest fear of all, not being feared. So he only does the scenes he wants to. Often directing them himself. But it kinda makes you wonder, what's he gonna do when he's elderly, and in need of help?
