I love his music. His music is the true identity of the American spirit. ❤ Rest in peace master Copland.

She's a sound scholar who knows her subject well and is a more satisfying writer than an interviewer.

The interviewer is Vivian Perlis, who collaborated on Copland's memoirs.

Copland’s score for the film “ The North Star “ is a true masterwork. The quintessential “ American “ composer managed to capture the spirit of  Ukrainian folk music. Astonishing achievement!

I think Brahms said that a piece of music has to be logical and well developed before it can be beautiful.

Does anyone know what year this interview was conducted?

Far and away the greatest American-born composer. Some might argue that either Gershwin or Ives deserve that honour. Whatever!  Copland's music appeals to just about everyone, not just in the USA but elsewhere as well. I attended a performance of his Third Symphony [the complete edition without Leonard Bernstein's cuts] with Neemi Jarvi conducting the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.  The audience loved it, relishing the finale [Fanfare for the Common Man] with wild abandon. So there you have it!
