MISTÉRIOS das CIDADES ENGOLIDAS: 5 tragédias que foram avisadas e ignoradas

Full documentary about destroyed cities: Saint-Pierre, Vajont, Caraguatatuba, Armero, and Galveston. Five real tragedies where the warning existed before they happened. May 8, 1902. Martinique. Mount Pelée has been smoking for weeks, animals have abandoned the slopes, a factory has already been buried. A commission appointed by the governor examines the mountain and declares Saint-Pierre safe. There is an election scheduled. The city needs its voters inside. At 8:02 a.m., a cloud of gas and ash at hundreds of degrees descends the slope at over 100 kilometers per hour and crosses the city in less than two minutes. Of the nearly 30,000 people who were there, two survive. October 9, 1963. Italian Alps. Geologists hired by the construction company itself had already written that the slope of Mount Toc was unstable. A journalist, Tina Merlin, published report after report saying that the mountain would fall into the lake and that the wave would go over the dam. She was taken to court accused of spreading false and biased news. She was acquitted. At 10:39 PM that day, 266 million cubic meters of rock fell into the reservoir in twenty seconds. The wave climbed the opposite slope to the houses of Casso, 230 meters above the lake level, and went over the dam with more than one hundred meters of water. Longarone ceased to exist in four minutes, with 1,917 dead. The dam did not break: it remains intact to this day. March 18, 1967. North coast of São Paulo. 580 millimeters of rain fell in two days on slopes with an inclination of more than forty percent. Six hundred and forty landslide scars opened up simultaneously and thirty thousand trees descended on Caraguatatuba. Here, no warning was ignored: there was no civil defense in the state, no network of rain gauges on the coast, and no ringing telephones. November 13, 1985. Colombia. A risk map completed five weeks earlier gave Armero a 100% probability of being flooded by lahars. Ten copies were distributed, among other reasons, to avoid frightening the population or driving down property values. Between the eruption of Nevado del Ruiz and the arrival of the lahar, two hours and twenty-one minutes passed, plenty of time to evacuate the city. A storm had knocked out the power, and there was no way to warn anyone. More than twenty thousand of the nearly thirty thousand people died. September 8, 1900. Texas. In Havana, Belén's observatory read the storm differently: it said it was entering the Gulf, heading towards Washington, which it saw curving towards Florida. Belén got the direction right—and an American rule prevented this reading from traveling by telegraph. But Galveston was warned: Isaac Cline's official report lists warnings received on September 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th, with the flag raised. A storm warning arrived. What came was a tidal surge of over four meters—something no one in the world could have predicted in 1900. In this documentary, you will understand why the Vajont Dam remains intact to this day, what the name Mount Toc means in the local dialect, why Armero was built exactly in the corridor that the volcano had already used twice, and what Galveston did afterward: it raised five hundred city blocks off the ground with jacks and built a five-kilometer seawall. In 1915, another hurricane of comparable size, with a similar tidal surge, killed eleven people.
