  tl;dr LOCK TF IN on a project, avoid random studies = fastest way to improve most skills<br>I&apos;ve talked about the importance of working on projects for years but understanding the reason why it works so well was a big discovery for me. Hope it helps some of you too :)

  Wanna know something sad? I was working this way when I was in my early 20s and improved really fast. Then, a bunch of people in school and at work told me I had to do studies because my fundamentals were shaky, so I started doing that instead of personal art and finished paintings. Guess what? My growth dropped to almost nothing. My self-confidence did too, because I let other people convince me not to trust my own process. I&apos;m still trying to get back the momentum I had. So yeah, as someone who&apos;s tried it both ways, listen to this guy!

  I&apos;m glad other people are saying this; it&apos;s also what my therapist suggested a while back. So many videos tell you you HAVE to do studies to improve... But you can&apos;t improve if you stop drawing because you hate studying.<br>I stopped drawing for a few years because I was frustrated with my progress and felt I had to do studies to improve, but they made me miserable to the point where I no longer enjoyed drawing. And it sounds like the simplest thing, but my therapist told me if you don&apos;t like drawing a million boxes in perspective, or a bunch of croquis of people you&apos;re not interested in, or painting subjects that bore you, then... don&apos;t.<br>Draw what you like and enjoy drawing again, and only study what you need to or are interested in at the moment. I&apos;ve finally picked up the pencil again and it&apos;s been slow but it&apos;s better than nothing.

  I realized this after already grinding for 4+ years. I was reading a thread on reddit about game development and programming and someone was saying a junior programmer was like 10x better then they were even though they had 10 years of experience. They asked the junior dev how they learned what course or book etc. And, the guy said that he didn&apos;t use courses or books, he would just pick a project and learn only what he needed to complete it, and then kept doing that until he found a job. Made me realize with art too, that often the people that are really good are the ones that just draw for fun and use references when they need to. Picking project and finishing it is the most important part.

  wise words. I&apos;m working on a comic and I was getting lost in a neverending learning journey, and finally after months of delaying the start of the actual comic I decided to dive right into it. I&apos;ve been progressing so much quicker since, of course I am still not able to draw the Sixtine Chapel, but I&apos;ve gotten so much better at comics in the last three months than the two years before that. Thanks for the reminder, as I was starting to get lost again!

  Also, DON’T BE AFRAID TO DRAW YOUR FAVORITE ANIME/MOVIE/TV/VIDEO GAME CHARACTERS!!!<br>You are already familiar with the characters and how they look, so even if you struggle with, say, the hands or hair layers, you already have a pre-existing idea of them.<br><br>Hope this helps at least someone 🫶

  This video is very validating for me personally. I&apos;m super lazy at drawing, so I ended up developing the mentality of &quot;I&apos;ll learn it when I need it&quot; because the idea of doing studies in sketchbooks and the like always felt like it would be a chore.
