  I’m totally self taught. I started out knowing nothing, and all these years later I still don’t know anything.

  When most people say self-taught, they mean that they quit their music lessons after 2 months. When Jacob says he's self-taught, he means he was only raised by a family of professional musicians, with every instrument at his disposal, years of formal music education, lessons from Jazz legends and many conversations and collaborations with really good musicians

  Jacob reminds me of the kids I grew up with. I came from a poor family in an extremely wealthy town. At one point, my family lived in a motel for five years while many of my classmates lived in mansions with indoor swimming pools. A lot of them had no real understanding of how wealthy they were. One phrase I heard constantly was, "We're not rich, we're just comfortable." They were so immersed in privilege that they genuinely couldn't see it. Jacob strikes me as exactly that kind of person. The idea of calling yourself “self-taught” when your mom is a literal music teacher and you’ve had multiple piano instructors is absurd. It’s infuriating how blind some people are to the advantages they’ve had.

  I actually think him sort of scuffing off the privilege he grew up with is one of the things that make him come off a bit unlike-able.<br>Like, I remember I watched a round table interview with actors talking about how they got their first audition once. I remember Jeff Bridges just plainly said that he got it because of his dad.<br>And that instantly, made me like him more. People who are seemingly oblivious to the good fortune and privilege they got in life are kind of insufferable.
