Today we’re swapping gridwork for a bit of eventing prep! I headed back to the HUGE arena we hired recently, but this time I brought Jam and Winnie along for an arena eventing session. With so much space to play with, I could finally set up some proper exercises that are rather difficult to recreate in my arena at home. The original plan was for this to be preparation for Winnie’s next event which, as we now know, she didn’t actually make it to… but we’ll move swiftly past that 😂 One thing I was particularly interested to see was how Jam and Winnie would cope being ridden away from each other. These two are incredibly attached at home, so taking them somewhere new together and then expecting them to concentrate individually could have been interesting. Thankfully, they actually surprised me with how grown up they were. Well… mostly. There was definitely some spookiness creeping in as the session went on, and I think having each other there meant they were both slightly more distracted than usual. Then we got to my homemade rail, ditch, rail combination. I’d very cleverly created a fake ditch using a water tray, and apparently both horses decided it was one of the most horrifying things they had EVER seen 😂 Safe to say it provided plenty of entertainment, some very questionable jumping and a moment on Jam where I genuinely thought I might be making an unscheduled exit out of the saddle! Chaos aside, this ended up being such a useful training day. We worked through the problems rather than avoiding them, both horses finished feeling great and I came away with plenty to think about ahead of our next events. Sometimes it’s the things they find unexpectedly difficult that make for the best training sessions! I hope you enjoy this one.
