I really like the idea of letting the garden do some of its own pest management. Choosing the right plants seems like a much more sustainable approach than constantly reaching for a spray bottle. 🌿

Tansy (ragwort) is considered a noxious invasive weed in Washington State. Tansy contaminated grass hay is a real problem. One of the kids in my sister's 4-H group lost her pony when the grass hay they bought for the winter had tansy in it. Ever since that sad day, I've been extra dedicated to eradicating Tansy whenever I see it. Fortunately, it pulls up really easy. You just can't ever let it go to seed, because they're wind dispersed, like with dandelions. Grandpa always put us kids on weekly pull patrol in the fields he planned to cut for his cows. He always made sure tansy never made it into any bales he cut for the winter.

This completely changed the way I think about pest control in the garden. I never realized certain plants could create a natural defense system that works better than constantly spraying chemicals.

People have been conditioned over the last 70 years to think that the only solution to pests is chemical sprays, when previously for thousands of years we knew the truth.

I have been growing lemon balm, lavender, marigolds, catnip, catmint, and yarrow in my vegetable garden for years. I've never had a problem with bugs. As an aside, my mom gave me the yarrow from her garden. It is pretty expensive to buy.

Moving away from chemical pesticides is the best step any gardener can take. One thing I love about yarrow is that the lacewing larvae it attracts are absolute aphid-devouring machines they’re literally nicknamed 'aphid lions'! Witnessing that biological warfare happen right in your own backyard is spectacular. Awesome video!
