The Last Samurai of Old Japan - The Real Life of SAIGO TAKAMORI

The last samurai was a real man, and his name was Saigo Takamori. This samurai history documentary tells the true story behind the legend: how he handed over Edo Castle without a single battle in 1868, why he turned against the Meiji government he had created, and how the Satsuma Rebellion of 1877 ended the samurai class for good. He handed over the largest city in Japan without a single shot being fired. Nine years later he was on a hillside above his own home town, with a bullet in his hip, fighting the government he had built himself. This is the real story of Saigo Takamori — the man Japan calls the last samurai. Not the film. The man. From a poor family at the bottom of the country, to the cold room where Edo Castle changed hands without a battle, to the schools in Kagoshima that a government far to the north mistook for a private army, to the rain and mud of Tabaruzaka, and finally to a hill called Shiroyama. And then to the strangest ending of all: a pardon, and a bronze statue put up by the very state that had hunted him down as a traitor. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ⚔️ WHAT YOU WILL LEARN IN THIS VIDEO → How Japan's biggest city changed hands in a single afternoon, with no siege, no bombardment and no fire → Why the man who helped build the new government ended up taking up arms against it → What the Korea argument of 1873 was really about, and why he volunteered to go unarmed → Why the Satsuma Rebellion was already lost before the first shot → Why Japan pardoned him twelve years after calling him a traitor → Where the last samurai fits in Japanese history, and what the film left out ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ⏱️ TIMESTAMPS 0:00 – The man who surrendered a city without a battle 0:32 – Nine years later: a bullet and a hillside 1:03 – Who Saigo Takamori really was 1:59 – Foreign warships and a shogun with no answer 2:17 – The least glamorous work in history 2:49 – 1868: the imperial army at the gates 3:15 – What every army did to a city back then 3:29 – Instead, he sat down and talked 4:11 – The government he built starts taking things away 4:53 – The break: the Korea argument of 1873 5:40 – Kagoshima: the schools that looked like an army 6:17 – The state stops paying the samurai 6:33 – The police officers sent south 7:11 – The night the students took the arsenal 7:48 – The detail every retelling leaves out 8:31 – Not a last charge: a long, badly supplied war 9:04 – Kumamoto Castle holds 9:31 – Tabaruzaka: days of rain and mud 10:15 – Why the rebellion was already over 10:36 – The retreat nobody talks about 11:17 – Shiroyama: the last morning 11:34 – How it ended, and why historians still argue 12:10 – 1889: the pardon nobody expected 12:38 – A monument from the government that beat him 13:38 – The question his life keeps asking Samurai Survival is a samurai history channel.
