  Rudi Giuliani in 2008. Well Hitch gets a pass on this one. I doubt if anyone could have foreseen how unhinged Rudi would become.

  Around the 16-minute mark Hitch alludes to Jefferson&apos;s desire to see the fledgling United States expand westward. There was actually another reason why that westward expansion was seen as a good idea. That was tobacco.<br><br>As well as being lucrative, in Jefferson&apos;s time tobacco was a difficult crop to sustain. It &quot;sucked&quot; a lot of nutrients out of the soil, rendering that soil unproductive until it could be replenished. Without modern fertilizers this meant the soil had to remain temporarily barren. So new land was always needed, leading to calls for westward expansion.<br><br><b>Southern</b> expansion from the 13 states became out of reach when Britain returned the two young colonies of West Florida and East Florida to Spanish rule in 1783. U.S. expansion <b>north</b> into Canada was impossible, so Westward ho! was the only option.
