I saw those Matt painting up close during a Star Wars exhibition back in the mid 90s and you can tell they are paintings when you look at them up close but then they do look more realistic when you step back and look at them from a small distance. It is amazing work. I saw the SF Transamerica Pyramid on the Death Star 2 Matt painting for the exterior of the hanger bays for the scene of the shuttle approaching the huge hanger bay.

All of that still stands up as the superb practical effects of that era
As we have learned cgi is not a replacement for the methods

Actually, George was intending Wookies to be the natives helping the Rebels but since Chewie was shown being Han Solo's co-pilot and therefore being able to use technology, the notion didn't work anymore, so he made the Ewoks, which was the opposite of Wookies.
Also, the close ups of Death Star II's surface, the tunnels inside and the core were separate models.

What great art in every little detail and thousands of hours work and endurance.

Okay. Another correction that no one else has pointed out yet. The matte painting for the Sarlacc pit shot you showed wasn't used to expand the desert background or scenery. It was used to hide the support beams holding up the skiffs to make it look like they were floating.

A better example of a matte painting used to extend the set and make it look bigger than it actually was is the Rebel hanger bay.

The Death Star 2’s image was actually flipped for the movie.

the movie was filmed at Elstree studios, not pinewood

Exactly because of these creatures Star Wars also appeared silly to me. It's like Sesame Street in Space.

The Dark Crystal does puppeteering much more believeable. Nearly all creatures were full sized and and are played by actors. The Skeksis also required multiple other people to support the actors inside the costumes. The movie took five years to make, and it shows.

Thanks for using real recording of your voice and no AI. It just makes a lot of difference and connects with me as a viewer in completely different way than with AI.
